Math opens us up to the invisible and ordered world all around us. Math helps us think logically, enhance our critical thinking skills, and create and improve our environment in a more orderly way. The reasoning skills learned through the practice of math are an essential piece of a liberal arts education.
Unlike advanced levels of math such as algebra and calculus, our middle school math program is designed to help students build a strong foundational understanding of skills such as fractions, decimals, negative numbers, and basic geometry, which most students will use regularly throughout their daily lives. The attitude students develop towards math in middle school is likely to shape their attitude towards math in high school, college, and life.
Every middle school math course is offered in both live and self-paced formats. The content of live and self-paced math courses is markedly different, and each format is designed to serve different kinds of math learners.
Live Math Courses
Live math courses are project-based and revolve around inspiring and helpful live math classes taught by passionate math mentors. These courses are ideal for students who need a strong support system and structured schedule to succeed in math and who enjoy learning in a group.
Near the beginning of each section of the course, students are introduced to an engaging project or simulation that will anchor their learning throughout the section in real-world application, and nurture their inherent motivation to master the concepts taught. In subsequent sessions, math mentors introduce students to new math topics and work through problems together, providing students the opportunity to ask for clarification and solidify their understanding and confidence. Students are required to complete daily math assignments that draw on readings from story-based math resources (such as Life of Fred textbooks) and skill-based applications (such as Khan Academy).
Self-paced Math Courses
Self-paced math courses are built around the math missions in Khan Academy and include the guidance and support of a math mentor without live classes. These courses are designed for independent or advanced math learners who enjoy working in Khan Academy and want a streamlined math program without the enrichment activities such as projects and math readings.
All live and self-paced math courses also include some common resources and requirements, detailed in the course descriptions.
Both live and self-paced math courses include access to Williamsburg’s Math Lab, where students can log in during set hours and receive 1:1 help from a knowledgeable and well-trained math tutor. Students visit Math Lab thousands of times each year and our math tutors ensure that students get the help they need to push through and succeed. Students are encouraged to log into Math Lab while they complete their daily math practice so they can readily get help understanding challenging math concepts.
Daily Math Practice
Students in all math courses are expected to spend 30–60 minutes each day, five days per week, practicing math. In self-paced courses, this math practice is all completed in Khan Academy. In live courses, students will practice math using a variety of resources including worksheets, Life of Fred textbooks, and Khan Academy, depending on the topic.
Accelerated Pace Encouraged
Both live and self-paced math courses accommodate students who want to move ahead at an accelerated pace. Math mentors are trained to support accelerated students and ensure that no student is held back from reaching their full potential each year in our math program. Math mentors individualize assignments and create customized math plans to help students achieve their goals each semester and to support and encourage students who wish to move ahead.
