Pre-Start Checklist

Welcome to Leadership Academy of Nevada!

We’re so glad you’re here! We want you to have a smooth start, so we’ve created this new student checklist to help you work through any potential glitches before you start your coursework. The most common issues are students not having their computers set up right, not having the books on hand, having some kind of a technology glitch, or being unclear about Student and Parent Orientations. This checklist is designed to help your family prepare to hit the ground running. If you get stuck on a task, email or call the office at 702-350-1472 and ask for help.

 Pre-Start Checklist Tasks
1.Register for Courses
Log into SIS using your parent login. Under your student's name, click "Registration." Select your student's courses according to the guidelines on THIS page.

Please note:
  • You can only register for classes if you've submitted a complete application for that school year and it has been approved. Both new and returning students must complete an application each year, although the returning application is shorter in length.

  • Times listed for classes are in Mountain Time.

  • If you need to change your schedule, try the "Drop/Switch" feature in SIS. There may be some limitations though since all enrollments and changes must be approved by the school. If you have any questions, please contact Kim Green at

  • SIS is where you can check your student's schedule, grades, and pacing and also communicate with mentors. It may be helpful to bookmark the site. You'll also find a link to SIS at the top right of this website.

2.Follow the LANV Family Blog: In order to stay up-to-date on important Leadership Academy of Nevada announcements and events, we encourage you to follow the LANV Family Blog by email. 3.Perform a Tech Check
Go to the Technology Requirements & Support page and:
  • Read “Computer and Software Requirements” together. Be sure you have a computer that will work and has the required software programs.

  • Read “How to Setup and Test Blackboard Collaborate On Your Computer” together. Follow all of the steps. If you hit a snag setting up Blackboard Collaborate, read “Having Trouble With Collaborate?” or “Mac Users–Help With Collaborate”.

  • Read “When Blackboard Collaborate Goes Down, Log In To Zoom”, and follow the steps.

  • Read “Technical Support for Canvas and SIS” together. Students, be sure you can log in and see your courses in both Canvas and SIS.

  • LANV has recently contracted with Gadget Experts to provide all laptops and laptop servicing for LANV students going forward. Gadget Experts maintains a limited inventory of computers available to LANV students. Computers will be checked out on a first come, first served basis.

  • If you need to borrow an laptop from LANV:

  • 1. Read and review the Laptop Policy & Handbook.
    2. Sign a new handbook/policy acknowledgment (complete one for each student).
    3. Pay the technology fee on the school store, by mail, or in person at the LANV office (7495 W Azure Dr., Suite 209, Las Vegas, NV 89130).
    4. Fill out the technology request form (complete one request per student).

Once the steps listed above are completed, you will receive an email from LANV with further instructions. The email will have a link to make an appointment with Gadget Experts for you to pick up your laptop (7260 West Azure Drive STE 150 Las Vegas, NV, 89130). Students who live outside of the Las Vegas area will be instructed on how to arrange to have a laptop shipped to them.
4.Obtain Books & Supplies
Your list of books and supplies will show in SIS in your "My Students" page.
  • If you are a new LANV student, we will automatically order the books for you. If you live in the Las Vegas area, they will be ready for you to pick up at the office at Check-in. If you live outside of the Las Vegas area and are checking in online, we will make contact with you to mail them directly.

  • If you are a returning student, and you would like LANV to order your books and ship them directly to you, please email If you have multiple students attending LANV, you will need to complete the form below for each student.

  • Many parents prefer to order their own books and submit receipts for reimbursement. This provides parents the option to order audio books, e-books, and/or use books they already own. Books may be reimbursed for up to the maximum amount provided on the booklist. If you choose to order your own books and submit your receipts for reimbursements, please complete our Book Reimbursement Policy Form, and submit your receipts to the office.

  • Life of Fred math textbooks will be provided for each student in LIVE middle school math, pre-algebra, or pre-calculus. These are LANV property and are expected to be returned within 10 days of withdrawal or year-end in the same condition it is received. Damaged textbooks may be assessed for a fee. Textbooks that are not returned will be considered stolen; fees will be assessed, and student records will be held until the student account is resolved.

  • We have access to science kits which include the essential supplies required for all high school science classes. If you would like to request a science kit, please email A science kit will be available for pickup at the LANV office if you live in the Las Vegas area, or it will be shipped directly to you if you live elsewhere in the state.
5.Log-in to Canvas
On or after December 1st, help your student log into Canvas. Canvas is the Learning Management System (LMS) where all course syllabi and class assignments are found. Courses are published and available to students on December 14th. That week, please do the following:
  • Parents of New Students: If your child hasn't already created their SIS login, have them check their email. An invitation was sent to create their login when you started their application process. Once they have a login and you have registered them for classes and the courses are published (i.e. after December 14th), SIS will create a "Canvas" account for them within the next 15 minutes. Your child's Canvas username and password will be the same as the login they created for SIS.

  • All Students, login to Canvas, bookmark this link, and then customize your Course menu. Here’s a screencast that shows you how.
6.Plan to Attend Student Orientation
  • New Students: A Live Orientation will be held here for all new students on January 3, 2019 from 11am-1pm MT.
